The Poly Prep Cross Country program is led by Coach Daniel Winn, a former NCAA Division 1 All-American and record holder at the University of Oregon. The team competes in developmental meets in the Ivy Prep League at Van Cortlandt Park, as well as regional events such as the Bob Pratt Invitational and the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational.
Coach Winn’s training approach helps our runners get stronger throughout the season in order to peak for league and state championships. Poly student-athletes enjoy a program where they know the purpose behind everything they do, and how it prepares them for competition. Coach Winn believes each runner is different and he works with Poly’s high-performance coaches to develop a balanced approach to bring out the best in each individual.

Following a father who continues to set the pace in his age group, running is a way of life for Daniel Winn. A state champion at Grover Cleveland High school in Portland, Oregon, he went on to an All-American career at the University of Oregon, where he set the school record in the mile. Winn spent the next two years running for the Boston Athletic Association, placing eighth in the 1500m at the 2016 Olympic Trials, before finding his way to New York City and landing at Poly as an assistant track and cross country coach in 2018. The Girls’ Cross Country team won the Ivy Prep League championship and NYSAIS championship that year. “I’ve been lucky to coach a really good, self-motivated, dedicated group,” he says. Along with his position at Poly, Winn coaches and competes for the Brooklyn Track Club.
The Poly Prep Cross Country team uses the terrain of Poly’s 25-acre campus as well as our six-lane track and high performance lab to train.
